Developer's Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I have an x86_64 computer and plenty of experience with Linux. I'd like to use 64 Studio but I don't really need to pay for support. What can you offer me?
  2. It sounds like you might be interested in becoming a beta tester. Testers get the latest version of the software in return for providing their feedback on it - we think that's a fair exchange. We don't consider the development community to be second class citizens, compared to paying customers. You can download an .iso image and start using the software today - we look forward to seeing your bug reports on our Trac ticket system!

  3. What kernel patches are you using?
  4. The most obvious changes from a standard Debian kernel are the realtime premption patches maintained by Ingo Molnar, and the bootsplash patches which give the distribution a graphical startup.

  5. Where can I get your kernel source package?
  6. That's in the backports repository:

    http://apt.64studio.com/backports/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/

  7. What about source code for the all of the packages you distribute?
  8. That's available by adding the following line to your repositories (for the testing branch):

    deb-src http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/testing 64studio main

Replace 'testing' in this line with 'stable' for the stable branch sources.

Or to browse source for the Debian packages: http://packages.debian.org/stable/source/

The GPL includes the offer for complete source code on physical media, which we will gladly provide on request. However the Debian packaging system makes it very convenient to get any source code you require via the internet, and for practical purposes you will probably need a later version of the source code than that which matches the binaries included on the 64 Studio install DVDs.

  9. I'm interested in buying developer support for 64 Studio - how much does that cost?
  10. For commercial developer support, we can provide a quotation depending on your requirements; you may prefer to pay per-month or per-project. Please contact us.

  11. I'm already subscribed to the 64studio-devel mailing list, but how do I create a bug or feature request ticket?
  12. On the navigation bar of the Trac site, click login. Your login username is your email address, and the password is the same one as for the 64studio-devel mailing list, which should have been mailed to you when you subscribed. After logging in you will see a navigation button called 'New Ticket'.

Kernel source

Re: the kernel source, the link seems to be dead. Can anyone advise where I can find the kernel source?

Is this it, or just a binary? http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/stable/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.21-1-multimedia-amd64_2.6.21-2_amd64.deb It is listed as 17 MB if I understand. Synaptic's reported download size for my installed binary is 18.2 MB.

Thanks in hope Sven Oxtoby

Kernel source moved to backports

Hi Sven,

Sorry about that, the previous link in the FAQ was out of date. Kernel source is now found in the backports repository, rather than stable or testing:

http://apt.64studio.com/backports/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/

Cheers!

Daniel
