nvidia video driver issue

Hi Have just installed 2.0 on the following hardware: MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte M55S-S3 (nForce 550 chipset) GRAPHICS: 256M ECS 7300 GS CPU: AMD 64 X2 5200+ RAM: 4G HARD-DISKS: 120G WD SATA, 320G WD SATAII DVD: ASUS 1814 BLT LightScribe SOUND CARD: M-Audio 24/96 Installed on 120G drive which is shared Win XP Pro. Installation went fine. When I booted into new install all I got was a blank screen. I went to a terminal (CTRL-ALT-F3) and checked the xorg.conf file. The video card was correctly identified and the diver is nominated as nvidia . I check dmesg and had some message about driver not present? I had to change the drive to vesa to get video. Any ideas why the nvidia driver is not present? Can I install from the DVD? BWT The network worked out of the box Any help appreciated. cheers

Thanks for the quick reply. Cool. I was going to try that (adding nv instead of vesa) but decided to ask here first cos I thought I read that the nvidia driver was shipped with 2.0. I must have read it wrong and that the nv driver was shipped. My bad! Does the nv driver offer 3D acceleration? As an aside, why does the xorg.conf file have nvidia as the driver and not nv? Would cause less hassles. Not taking anything away from the distro as I think it's great! I'll change the driver to nv tonight when I get home and see how it goes. Once again thanks! cheers.

The drivers from Nvidia are proprietary/closed-source, so they probably wouldn't ship with a Debian based distro such as 64 Studio. Until you can download and install the actual Nvidia driver, try the open-source "nv" driver that should be available on your 64 Studio 2.0. Just comment-out or remove the "vesa" in your xorg.conf and change it to "nv". Here's my xorg.conf reference to the "nv" driver: Section "Device" Identifier "nVidia Corporation GeForce 7100 GS" Driver "nv" BusID "PCI:2:0:0" EndSection Hope this helps.

Quentin Thank you for the pointer to the FAQ. I tried the nv driver but this didn't seem to work so after downloading the packages detailed in the FAQ all is working nicely now! Once again muchos gracias! Now onto playing with 64. cheers mc
