Hi, I've just got a new PC and I'm having trouble with the 64 bit OS, both 2.1 and 3b3. The motherboard is Asus M3A78-EM on board graphics ATI radeon HD3200 on board sound realtek alc1200 (for now, once i can get installed i'll insert my terratec card) AMD Phenom 8650 3x2.3gb CPU 4gb ram 500gb SATA drive I don't recall off hand any other details. I get as far as installing software, I get to 37% (installing Gimp) on ver 3b3, and I get to 47% installing software on ver 2.1. I also tried installing 32bit version 2.1. It installed ok but locked up (blank screen) directly after GRUB.

OK 2.1 is up and running now. AHCI is the keyword here. I installed 2.1 all OK. SATA gives 3 mode options in my BIOS - AHCI, SATA, RAID. AHCI is the only one that boots without the 'waiting for hd1...' error. It spun through an error routine 'ata1 soft reset.....' which just kept running up the screen, so I swapped DVD and HDD SATA plugs. Error moved to ata3..... It's the DVD drive! Unplugged DVD and booted fine. Plugged IDE's back in, all OK. Plugged DVD drive back in, this time it spun through the error a couple of times, then booted. Subsequent reboots only show the error once, otherwise all is well with 2.1. On board NIC not detected, but the spare one in the bottom of spare parts drawer works fine. 3b3 installed ok and installed grub. Errors instantly out of grub. no boot. As I have had some success, I will start another thread with 3b3 woes when I attempt it again. For now though, I need to make some noise! Thanks for the help!! Nice that the new grub plays nice with ubuntu studio too. That saves a lot of hassles !

Hi Dave, I've actually managed to get both CentOs and Ubuntustudio 32 bit versions, installed and up and running. I'll have a look through the 64 Studio partition for the details you mentioned. I notice another post where someone with the same mobo got installed OK, but had issues with the network card... My next approach is to disable the IDE drives to simplify the install process, maybe something there is getting mixed up in the process. I'm not too frustrated on the whole, it gets a bit that way at points, but 64Studio is such a good distro I'm more than happy to plug away through these issues. I'm at a stage now where it doesn't matter about downtime on what is essentially a spare machine right now (as long as I reinstall the ubustu grub so the Mrs can watch videos with it) Thanks for the pointers, I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi Aaron, Next I'd try booting a livecd to see what happens, if it boots ok you can see how the livecd is setting itself up. Then you could use the livecd to mount the partition you have installed 64studio on and check fstab to see if it matches your menu.lst, could be the fstab and menu.lst are different? You could also edit the menu.lst to remove the splash e.g. nosplash you could experiment with acpi=off noapic also. While your in there look in /dev/ to see if it refers to sda or hda. Livecd's are brilliant tools, I know it must be frustrating not being able to get your new PC up and running, we've all hit walls like this, believe me its good learning, even if it doesn't feel like it right now. I've been using google with your system stats to see if I could find any bios settings that are relevant, without having access to your bios settings its a bit of a task. There are other references to SATA problems on the searches. Maybe it would be a good idea to find the manual for you bios. x4 speed is fine for DVD's you don't need to go as slow as x1. Good luck, See you soon. Cheers! Dave.

Hi Aaron, hd(0,6).... I don't use SATA drive but have you tried sd(0,6) - sd (2,6) Is the beta3 also defaulting to hd? Cheers! Dave.

Hi Dave, I need to pass root (hd0,6) on the first line of the grub menu for it to continue. using 'sd' gives an error parsing number On the second line (the pointer to vmlinuz) I have tried different values. I can see whether any of these is successful by the 64 Studio splash screen being displayed. /dev/sda7 However, no matter what these values may be, it still mentions it is waiting for root filesystem hd1 thanks Aaron

Hi Aaron, Because you're having trouble installing "both" versions 2.1 & beta3 I'd like to go back to basics. Have you installed either version on another machine at all? What burner\method are you using? and at what burning speed? To check your download is in good condition, please download the .md5sum file provided, and compare it with the iso image file; for example: $ md5sum 64studio_2.1_amd64.iso $ cat 64studio_2.1_amd64.iso.md5sum It seems strange that you are getting errors with all the images, so I'd like to eliminate the obvious. If the errors are just on the "new" PC we'll have to look at other options. Cheers! Dave.

Hi Dave, I haven't installed from either of these dvd's successfully on another machine....... my old rig was 32 bit now the new one is 64bit. (the 32bit 64studio 2.1 installs on the old rig but not the new one) I'm using k3b, the machine I used to burn the dvd's with is the same one I burned successful install dvd's from. I burn at 1x speed, and checked md5sum before beginning. I installed the 64 bit 2.1 last night with no errors, but it got through grub and ended with 'waiting for root filesystem'... where it eventually timed out and went into some kind of rescue mode, Thanks, Aaron

I'm going to re - burn the dvd's using the new rig and new burner to see if that helps.

I re-burned with gnome baker on the new machine, same errors ocurred as before. 3.0b3 installs without error then crashes after grub 2.1 installs without error then confuses itself in grub - I have to edit the grub menu to boot from hd(0,6) which is where it is installed, it was set up as hd (2,6). I then hit 'boot' and it times out 'waiting for root filesystem'

In the old days it was here. Outdated now! [23-Apr-2008] The latest one is here below beta3 [07-Mar-2009]. Be aware it is an "alpha" beta ;-) It "hasn't" been released yet by Free!. The [07-Mar-2009] image is ok here. You are responsible when testing these unreleased images. Cheers! Dave.

I tried installing using the keystroke combo . The install whizzed through and rebooted. Got a screenfull of errors when I tried to boot into 64Studio from Grub. So I reinstalled again with gui enabled, got the following error: execution of preseeded command "chroot /target/usr/sbin/64studio-config --non-interactive --reset" failed with exit code 1 Any further attempts to install from that session were met with debootstrap error.

I tried to install again,

I tried to install again, using the GUI and this time no errors were mentioned. It crashed immediately after running grub, with a screen or more of hex. what I could pull out of it were some details: call trace: tick_handle_periodic hpet_interrupt_handler handle_irq_event do_irqd do_irqd kthread child_rip kthread child_rip code: Rip tick_periodic RSP CR2 [end trace] I haven't included the hex as it would seem very tedious to copy out.... Thanks, Aaron

Hi, During the install of beta3 to get a more detailed verbose error report use: [ctrl] + [alt] + [F4] to get back use [ctrl] + [alt] + [F1] Alternating between these modes should allow you to change between GUI Menu and verbose mode. Post back as much error detail as you can. Also you could try installing the 64studio_master image to see if that works ok. Cheers! Dave.
