networked printers

I have 2 printers on my home LAN, an Epson CX4200 on my wife's XP computer and an HP 2600n that is connected to the router. I can't seem to get either of them setup under Studio 64 3 Alpha. For the CX4200 I go to Administration --> printers, select add printer, select network printer and select windows (smb) from the drop down list. It then asks for a username and password. I don't have those computers set up for passwords so I just click OK. I select my wife's computer from the list by the Host headding, select the CX4200 printer and click forward. On the next page I select the CX4200 from the list (I had to install gutenprint to get the cx4200 driver to appear on the list). and click forward. I type in a name and click apply. The window goes away and nothing happens. No new printer is added to the list. I don't know why as Studio64 can obviously see both my wife's computer and the printer connected to it. For the HP 2600n, since it is connected to the router I don't know how to find it. I don't know its address and I can't find anywhere to browse for LAN computers (the option is grayed out).

Passwords

I have had the same situation. Even though windows PC's might not be set up to use passwords, there is still a user name and password for remote access. My suggestion is to temporarily enable passwords, change the password to something you know, and disable passwords again. Now use that user name and password in the printing dialogue. Works for me. I need this to use my wife's laser printer, connected to the windows PC she has used for ages, and do not want to change... Old habits die hard ;-) Regarding the 2600n, try pinging the host name (you should see the host name in the printer's setup screen. Otherwise assign an IP to the printer and set it up manually, and use that IP as the host in your printer dialogue. Hope it helps, Quentin
