Hey, I would like to have your opinion on the best way to have a multimedia player on jackd. On beta 3, Audacity is not stable, VLC as not the jackd plugin, and it is still not possible to connect gstreamer application to jackd, even through Pulse Audio. So, which choice? Toine

Multimedia players and and jackd

Hi, I have managed to have multimedia players, including flash player, as jack clients by installing the "libasound2-plugins" package. This installs the needed libraries in /usr/lib/alsa-lib Then I create a .asoundrc file, as explained here: http://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1022&p=5400&hilit=flash+jack#p5400 This way you have a jack plugin for alsa. Supposedly, all applications working with ALSA will be seen by jack as alsa-jack clients This work-around has spoiled mplayer and the mplayer firefox plugin though, which already were jack-aware in my system. If I launch it, I have lots of xruns. But VLC and totem-xine are fine. I don't know how on earth, but now both appear as jack clients (not through alsa). Totem with gstreamer doesn't sound in my computer. I don't know why. I installed totem-xine which uninstalls totem-gstreamer. youtube and ximeo appear as alsa-jack clients in qjackctl. I don't have pulseaudio installed, by the way. Cheers! Pablo

I use amarok as a music player on another system, but it is a bit top heavy for that old PC and tend to fall over every so often. On my studio system I only ever want to listen to a very specific track - the one I want to hear now. Amarok is a slight overkill for that purpose.

why not amarok?

Quentin, Can you explain to me how you tweak so Totem can connect to jack through gstreamer ? on my workstation, gstreamer applications always output on my integrated mother board sound card through pulse audio, never on my professional sound card through jack...

Confused...

My audacity seems stable, and totem connects via gstreamer to jack without problems. I generally use totem.
