Cannot boot 64 Studio 3.0 (AMD64) with multimedia kernel on Core 2 Quad 9550

I tried to install 64 Studio 3.0 Beta 3 (AMD64 version) on my PC which uses an Intel Core 2 Quad 9550 CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX+ video card, with Intel (SigmaTel) onboard HDA sound. Boot seems to go OK for a while and then fails with a blank screen and no errors. Nothing happened after that. So I tried installing Linux Mint 5 and upgrading to 64 Studio 3.0 according to these instructions: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=25972 Again, all went well until I attempted to boot into the multimedia kernel, when the install got as far as the top of the Linux Mint progress bar and then went to the same blank screen with nothing happening. I experimented around and it will boot if I specify "noapic nolapic" on the grub kernel line, but that leaves me with only one CPU core. I would really like to get a realtime kernel working on this machine but have not yet found any distro in which that works. Can any kind soul help? Here is the syslog of a typical failed boot in my current setup (Mint 5 upgraded to 64 Studio 3.0). Are there any clues in here? The CPU cores seem to come up fine, then something goes wrong. The last two lines are where it hangs and I reboot. Jun 22 02:03:20 beast syslogd 1.5.0#1ubuntu1: restart. You cannot believe how many times I had to give that exact same answer on the forums, direct mails, users list etc. Best way to learn is to do it yourself! Welcome to the 3.0 beta experience... Cheers, Quentin

Fixed it

I have it running now. It was a problem with the video driver. GDM and X wouldn't start properly without the proprietary NVIDIA driver, and there was something wrong with the installation of that. I booted into the 2.6.24 kernel and used the Services control panel to disable "Graphical login manager (GDM)", then rebooted to the 2.6.29 multimedia kernel and used aptitude to search for and purge the one installed package with NVIDIA in the name (can't remember the exact name). The I downloaded the driver NVIDIA_Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg2.run from NVIDIA's site using wget. I installed that (with no special steps) and could get into X at 640x480 maximum resolution. So in a terminal I did "gksu displayconfig-gtk" and selected my monitor (Dell P1110) and a 1600x1200 resolution. Everything seems to be working now, including Rosegarden, Ardour, Jack and ZynAddSubFX. This seems very promising!
