3.0 installation problem

Hi, I'm trying to install either 2.1 or 3.0 new and failing on both. The 2.1 problem is reported on elsewhere and I may try the solution to get this working (change the clock to get around stale software problem) but I'd like to understand the 3.0 error... It installs cleanly and starts the boot OK but fails during 'setting kernal variables' with "kernal.maps_protect is an unknown key". It then hangs at 'Starting Gnome display manager'. The hardware is an intel 32bit cpu. ASUS MB. 1.5 gb mem and lots of disk. another linus distro has run on this machine and in fact, it was speced for linux originaly. If there is a simple work around, I'd be most grateful. This is essentially and upgrade for an older Studio 2 Go installation (Debian based music package, now unsupported). I am pretty new to linux and any unix-like os Thanks Paul

Hi Paul, The error message of the kernel maps is a known issue, and does not influence the operation of the system. There is a workaround for it on the forums, but this is not your problem. I would have cited the GPU as the culprit, but if 2.1 installs fine (after the workaround) this is not the case. I would try some of the so called cheat codes in grub. Here is a post by Dave: If you hadn't mentioned sidux is ok I would have recommended checking your bios settings, but then again sidux could be using some hidden cheat codes for initial graphics settings. Change Boot Options Temporarily For An Existing Installation: Googled: boot cheat codes Check out codes like: xmodule=nv

Following up: By setting the bios clock back to 2005, the 2.1 installation fails in a different way. By setting it to 2007, it succeeds and boots up fine. I'd still like to get 3.0 working though ....
