3.0 beta3: nvidia quadro fx 570m

greetings! just installed 3.0 beta3 on a thinkpad t61p with an nvidia quadro fx 570m video adapter. the internal display is fine, but i would also like to run an external cloned monitor. this doesn't seem to be an option with the available open source drivers. do i need to go to the proprietary nvidia module for this functionality? cheers! .pltk.

i installed nvidia-glx-new and can now get a cloned external display, but i have to boot without the external display attached, and then reset it in preferences -> screen resolution. if i boot with the external display attached, i lose both displays at the graphical login screen. .pltk.
