unable to login

this may seem dumb (as it is) but I don't remember being asked to setup a user/password when I installed. Due to a power outage, my machine booted and now I'm stuck at the gnome login. Is there a default user/pass, or a way to reset/create a user short of reinstalling everything?

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword This is for ubuntu . I imagine it works on the new neta as well being based on ubuntu . dont reinstall before it is absoluttely needed. its maybe hard to fix some probs but small things should never be cause of reinstall. I only reinstall fresh installs that somehow seems borked or if I get really tired of the OS and decides to try something new. anyway backup is still essential. I would hate to loose my hydrogen drumsets I collected due to reinstallst.
