Lost my password!

I'm still running on the old version of 64studio (the one that was based on Debian). I didn't want to upgrade to an Ubuntu based version because I've always had problems with Ubuntu and its derivatives. Anyway.... today I needed to launch Synaptic for the first time in over a year. It asked for my password. There are only about 4 passwords that I ever use but it wouldn't accept any of them. Next, I tried to log in as root but I got exactly the same problem. Is there a way to reset my password?

Thanks for the tip but

Thanks for the tip but fortunately, I've just managed to resolve the issue by restoring a disk image of my Linux partition that I backed up some time ago. So I'm now into Synaptic but it hasn't helped much. Basically, I need to update to scons v1.2 but the most recent version showing in Synaptic is 0.96.93-2 Is it still possible to update Synaptic to show newer versions of its various packages?
