No Sound After Hard Disk Installation of v2.0

Howdy... I've tried to find the answer to this in the on-line manual and in the FAQ but with no joy. I'm very new to using Linux for music, although I've been using MIDI since it was first released in the early 1980s. I've collected both the Live-DVD and the Installation DVD for 64 Studio 2.0 and have been trying things out. The Live-DVD boots Ok and my SoundBlaster Live 5.1 sound card works Ok. However, after successfully installing the 'real' version of 64 Studio on a spare partition on my PC, the 'real' installation produces no sound at all. I just want to know where I should start looking in the system logs, etc to see why the sound doesn't work on the 'installed' version. I've had a look at /var/log/messages from each boot attempt... but I can't see anything that makes any sense to me there. For example, there's no sign at all of any 'hw:0' -type messages... Further info: When Jack is started, it reports that it can't see any MIDI devices and certainly, there's no alsa_pcm devices (input or output) after the hard disk boot but everything is there Ok following the Live DVD boot. I'm not sure if it will make any difference but I read something about using 'pci=routeirq' in the messages files... but where do I change that? Thanks for any forthcoming info. John

Also run hwinfo --usb etc., see hwinfo --help

please install hwinfo and as root, run in a terminal hwinfo --sound and if your have a PCI sound card also run hwinfo --pci Don't post the whole stuff. Can you see your sound card in the messages? Cheers, Ralf

dell inspiron 1520 - no sound

OK, so no knows why a dell inspiron 1520 won't produce sound under 64studio. Does anyone know what music oriented version of linux will work on a dell inspiron 1520 ? Is the problem the computer, linux or 64studio? It would be a shame to have to go back to windows :-( John Grinham Toowoomba Australia

Try Ubuntu Studio or Dell's Ubuntu distro(works awesome on my inspiron 1525) from what I've been reading use the 7.x distro not the 8.x, really bad latencies in Hardy,(It even crashed Jack on my laptop) go with Gusty, I'm going to try 64Studio, but if it doesn't work I'll reinstall Ubuntu Gusty

I wouls love to help you, but unfortunately I kept away from laptops completely for music use. I use a Large PC case with a LAN-party sling, and thus have a "mobile PC". You should try using external sound hardware if you can, for two reasons... 1) Laptop sound generally sucks 2) Laptop sound cards often works only under Windows... Not much help, but it's all I can think of. Cheers,

I have just bought a new Dell inspiron 1520 laptop. 64 Stuio installed seemingly OK, but I have no sound. The description of the sound card in the invoice is just 'integrated stereo sound' When I run alsaconf it says it finds the card and tries to install it, but at the end of the script there is an error right before it tells me to have fun! I ran the debug script, maybe someone can make sense of it. Thanks in advance. I have the same problem. Just installed 64 Studio and have no sound at all. I installed Ubuntu and had sound so it is an install problem.

Hey Peter, Please give some info on your system. Sometimes stuff happens relating to certain hardware (and the issues might be known) Do you have any USB midi interfaces? etc. I had 64studio since version 0.6.0 and on every install so far I had absolutely no problems relating to getting my sound to go. It's worth investigating the contents of /proc/asound alternatively you might want to use the script at http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Aadebug posting the relevant details, like what soundcard you have etc. Might help us debug your problem. cheers, tim
