select and install software fails

I have an athlon 1.3 ghz machine. Version 1 installed and ran fine, but version 2 fails when I get to select and install software. The packages unpack, but then the screen goes red and the failure message comes up. I've downloaded and burned it twice but both times the installation failed multiple attempts. any suggestions?
