Hello, Im currently planning to build a new system (within a small budget) that will be used as my DAW and I am trying to weigh out the benefits of a dual core system vrs a faster clock single core chip. Would a linux based DAW really benfit with a dual core chip running at 2ghz as opposed to a single core chip running at 3ghz? Is ardour optimized for dual core technology? Thanks for the input.

Ardour Yes - Jackd No

My understanding is that some apps benefit greatly from multiple cores, and others don't. In particular Ardour is multithreaded and will benefit to some extent, but current versions of Jackd are not. I think it rather depends on what you are going to use the system for: one application class that really can benefit is encoding/transcoding. But in general, modern well-coded applications will be threaded and so could potentially run smoother on multiple cores. I have to say I'm very happy with my new quad-core system at the moment! :-) Regards Steve Author of GENPO - the GENeral Purpose Organ - http://genpo.sourceforge.net/
