Hi all Hopefully not posting an already answered topic ! I pretty new to Linux and completely new to Audio work (currently running Ubuntu on Desktop) and looking for a laptop. I would like to use 64 Studio to tinker around with recording some classical performances (wife is a soprano) usually consisting of Piano / Voice sometimes organ which hopefully will then go onto our website with video etc....... I am looking to buy laptop and this is one of the uses together with some web development stuff (when I start to learn it !) and would appreciate any general advice and what to lookout for / laptop recommendation's My budget is pretty thin £300 - £400 ish mark, so dont want to make a mistake ! Would then have to save up for any external mixing / audio input devices etc.. So far I have gleaned that a dual core AMD setup is advised (what speed would be recommended as a minimum ?) and does anyone have any pointers on : - Good on board wireless devices / on board video device / on board sound chip sets that work reasonably well under Linux, + any basic pointers on general recording combinations (thinking some kind of reasonable fire wire / USB external audio device / maybe a mixer ?) would be welcome ! Regarding the Video work I know good on-board video is required, but on my budget think I would have to stick with using the desktop at home for editing ! Thanks Andy trying to do too much with too little knowledge.......

I've got an HP G6030em (sempron 3200+). Cost £350 from Comet about 6 months ago. Works just fine; broadcom wireless was slightly fiddly to setup, but works just fine. I've not tested hooking up an external monitor, or suspend and resume, so can't confirm if they work. Tesco are currently selling an apparently uprated machine G6062 twin athlon for £375. Can't guarantee that the 6062 is the same inside as the g6030.

Check this out for advice...
