Digi desk?
Is it a digital desk?
Then there should not be a major problem.
I have a 16channel Digital desk with an ADAT extention card. The card has 4 optical ADAT ports (2 x 8ch in and 2 x 8ch out). In the PC I have a RME Hammerfall with the same compliment of ports.
Quality is excellent - price may be a factor. See if you can find a second hand Hammerfall 9632 or similar. Works perfectly, and should be almost affordable.
Cheers,

Hi Quentin,
At the moment I run a Yamaha M916,old heavy but good or has been up until recently, I am looking at new desks but finding it difficult to get them with out stereo inputs I'm puzzled as why a so called 24 Chanel input would have 4 setup as stereo, anyway back to the point the new desk will be analog. What difference does that make??
Thanks,
Difference
With an analog desk you would probably plug your multi channel audio capture card into the busses, or perhaps use the send-receive plugs to directly record your inputs.
A digital desk does exactly that - record the live inputs - and this allows you to record the input signals to disk. You have an exact replica of what you had "live" because the recorded signal "is" the live sound going though the mixer.
It is a matter of choice. I just find it a bit easier to plug 4 optical cables into my PC and my mixer than running 16 cables in and 16 out.
Cheers,
