External audio device for Toshiba P200

Hi,

Can anyone suggest a good external audio device to use as a replacement for the awful built-in Intel HDA chipset on my laptop (Toshiba P200)? I want to use my laptop as a sort of portable studio mainly for multi-track (4 tracks plus) audio recording. Any advice on USB and firewire devices would be appreciated!
