Out of ideas, suggestions welcome for CUPS fails to print. [Printer worked fine in Ubuntu and Vista] Setup appears great in 64Studio using Desktop>Administration>Printing>New Printer, resulting in HL-2060---CUPS +Gutenprint v5.0.0 "Ready" Printer State: Idle, accepting jobs, Published Also used http://localhost:631 and have Allowed Users Set as "douglas" and "root". device is usb://Brother/HL-2040%20series set as Default The printer says 'Ready' and receives job, light goes on, motors whirls, but no print. "HL-2060---CUPS+Gutenprint-v5.0.0-33 Test Page root 87k 1 completed at Thu 10 Jul 2008 09:35:10 AM PDT" ... but nothing prints .... Every attempt is listed in the 'print jobs' and acts as if it's been printed, but nothing prints. In Printer 'Properties' the documents appear in 'print jobs' but never has printed for 64Studio. Print Test Page was sending to printer and it went through motions of printing, lights & whirl sounds, but never has printed for 64Studio. Now receiving msg: "Error: Quota Limit Reached" # Printer configuration file for CUPS v1.2.7 # Written by cupsd on 2008-07-10 19:15 Info HL-2060---CUPS+Gutenprint-v5.0.0 DeviceURI usb://Brother/HL-2040%20series State Idle StateTime 1215707778 Accepting Yes Shared Yes JobSheets none none QuotaPeriod 0 PageLimit 0 KLimit 0 AllowUser douglas AllowUser root OpPolicy default ErrorPolicy retry-job /var/log/cups/error_log: E [07/Jul/2008:10:54:20 -0700] CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer: Unauthorized E [07/Jul/2008:15:07:40 -0700] CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer: Unauthorized E [07/Jul/2008:15:08:03 -0700] CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer: Unauthorized E [07/Jul/2008:15:08:03 -0700] CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer: Unauthorized E [07/Jul/2008:15:08:03 -0700] CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer: Unauthorized E [07/Jul/2008:15:08:03 -0700] CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer: Unauthorized E [07/Jul/2008:15:08:08 -0700] cupsdAuthorize: Empty Basic username! Does this help: http://www.swerdna.net.au/linhowtohl2040.html The Brother-supplied drivers required lpr, which is installed by default on 64 Studio (package: cupsys-bsd).

Thank you, very much. Your suggestion got me going.

It is working, after an estimated 20 hours of head-banging frustration. My learning curve as a relative-nwbe was painful. It is my perception after this experience and reading many forums, How-to's, that Linux remains "some assembly required" in contrast to other expensive OS. But I am not unhappy that I paid in hours of learning-curve rather than supporting the richest man in the world. Thank you who take the time to respond to "dumb" questions! I am going to do my best at creating a How-to install this printer, at least what worked for my Printer Brother HL-2040 in 64Studio. In short the best help was the Brother web site: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/index.html For me the CUPS installation http://localhost:631/ proved to be a waste of time - until - I installed the lpr & cupswrapper DRIVERS from the Brother web site.
