Root privileges from LiveCD?

Is it possible to obtain root privileges running the LiveCD. I've just started using the 64Studio LiveCD 2.0 amd64, and would like to use Synaptic to install some optional programs. Getting the sinking feeling root login is unavailable using the Live distro. Any hints?

installing apps from any LiveCD will kill performance.

High performance, that is. A realtime kernel such as 64studio needs to have (relatively) high performance. It will be a slug/slow running from LiveCD and installing more apps that can only live in ram will slow it down more.

You would be right...

Live CD is only for try-out... Use the install DVD
