How to install and use: Virtual MIDI keyboard player
This nice application by Pedro López Cabanillas. So simple and so funny.
Installation:
1) Download vmpk from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=236429
2) Install cmake and libqt4-dev.
3) Follow the README file (cmake, make and make install).
Launch:
Drag the piano icon to the panel and click it. Or write vmpk in a terminal.
Ideas for use:
Testing sounds:
Start Jack, start the promising software or hardware synthetiser and test the sounds with just the keyboard.
Having fun/educational:
Make up different keymaps, for example, you can assign contiguous keys to consonances like in a harmonica and make playing easy and attractive for children or non-musicians. Even at the first attempt they'll be surprised to hear nice music coming from their fingers.
Writing to a MIDI sequencer:
Start jack, start your favourite MIDI sequencer, mine is Rosegarden and connect vmpk as a record device and write some music from the keyboard.
Other ideas are welcome
