Problems with internet/networking

Hi everybody. First of all, nice distro, the sound works nicely (after giving hard time during install, but mostly because of the DVD drive). Needless 2 say but I'm a noob (not a total noob but...). And I have couple of problems: 1. Cannot set resolution and Refresh to 1440x900@75Hz (my specs are listed at the bottom of this post); 2 (major bummer) Cannot connect to the net !!!!!!!!!!!! I tried to follow the manual on this site but it seems that my LAN Ethernet (onboard) is not recognised (but dunno how to check). The Strange thing is in the Network settings it shows 2 Wired connections (eth1 and eth0 - eth0 is inactive) and PPPOE modem (telephone icon) But I don't have two LAN devices. Now I installed the pppoe in Ultimate Ubuntu 1.9 (HH 8.04 AMD 64 ver.) but the setup in 64 studio doesn't seem to have support for eth devices to be chosen as modems. My connection is a "wireless net" but it's like this: I am connected to some thingie on top of my buildng ("access point" I think it's called) via a LAN cable and the only number the provider gave me to input for a windows XP connection was this: 192.168.16.1. In order to connect (in windows and ubuntu) i need to type in my username and password, but in 64 studio I can only choose a telephone type of a modem, and above all I dunno how to check which ethernet device (eth0 or eth1) is real, cos I'm sure I don't have two LAN devices and I tried the "pppconfig or pppoeconf" but the terminal says "not allowed" (or smt like that). here are my specs (hope it's useful): AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual-Core 5000+ 2.60GHz/1MB BOX 64Bit MB SocketAM2+ nForce560,Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3 PCI-e/DualDDR2/SATA2/RAID/GLAN=THAT's THE LAN DEVICE=/SB7.1/1394 DIMM DDR2 2x1GB, 800MHz OCZ Titanium XTC/EPP/CL 4-4-4-15 HDD SATA2 7200 400GB Hitachi Deskstar 16MB DVD+/-RW Pioneer DVR-215D black SATA 20xdvd+/-, 10xdvd-r/+r DL, 2MB ATX Middle Tower 400W Codegen 604AL-CA,USB & AU, LCD, Fan, Black (20+4 pin) Monitor TFT 19" Samsung 920NW 5ms, 300cd/m2, 700:1,160/160,WIDE,Black/Silver MSI ATI RADEON X550 128MB Creative SoundBlaster Live 5.1 PLS help cause I'm interested on using distro for creating music and audio stuff. Thanx guys and sorry for such a long post

I have not played with this recently, and I don't want to risk putting my system down right now, as I am in the middle of an important project that runs until the end of the month. If no one has come up with useful info by that time, I give it a bash... Cheers, Q

Still nutnin

Eth0 is usually taken by "Ethernet over firewire" so you would use the eth1. You have to run pppoe commands as root , sudo pppoe-(command) I do not use the pppoe in 64studio, but bought an inexpensive external broadband router that takes care of the connection stuff externally. All my PCs can then use the internet over the LAN.

Still no success

You are doing OK for a noob with a new machine, and 64 Studio 2.1. The ATI GPU is bit tricky to set up to work correctly. I have no ATI cards in my systems at the moment because of this... Try to search for more info on newer driver for your GPU to sort the problems. Cheers, Q

... Yeah, I also forgot to say (but I think it's obvious, though) that I have now a Tri-boot system: MS Windows XP pro SP2 Ultimate Ubuntu 1.9 64 studio All on one harddisk :)
