Firewire1394

Dmesg shows me a Firewire device but the driver does not seem to be installed by default. I want to create a Firewire Network, ifconfig does not show any 1394 devices being active. Will I need to follow the step as described on this site? http://www.linux1394.org/start_install.php Or is there another way to get this to work? I want to assign an IP address to the 1394 Network.
