ALSA doesn't recongnise E-MU 0404.

Over that past few months, I've been gradually tweaking 64Studio in attempt to incorporate it with my studio but have hit a brick wall. I feel this problem is the source for a majority of my other problems as well, so solving it would be wonderful. The problem being ALSA won't recognise my E-MU 0404 card (non-USB) but rather says it is a Sound Blaster card. I tried setting it up as such and nothing works, no sound in or out and as far as I can tell, the MIDI doesn't work either... but that's a whole other adventure. Now, I have 64studio running with the 2.6.27.6 kernel and 1.0.18rc version of ALSA (latest at the time, though I'm going to update to the latest release very soon) as well as the standard multimedia kernel and ALSA. Neither work with the card, though I've heard stories of other people having it recognised fine more or less from installation... which gives me hope. If you have any ideas, please let me know. I can't wait to start recording. -Troy

If I understand correctly, the .21 kernel is the last kernel in a series, regarding scheduling. After that the scheduler changed, and RT work had to basically start from scratch, and they have not caught up yet. I trust the issues will be resolved, and that we will regain, or at least approach the performance of the 64 Studio kernel not to far in the future. This is important, as we are starting to see hardware incompatibilities emerging. Again, we are at the mercy of the Kernel hackers to come up with the magic.

Read some more and I understand. For the most part. Not to go off topic, but why would the 2.6.21-1-multimedia-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT RT kernel have a performance edge on, say, the latest kernel configured for RT use?

I was under the impression

I was under the impression that the latest kernels were inherently realtime from download. At least, that's what I've read. Apparently I was mistaken. Anyway, I'll give it a go.

2.6.27?

The current RT kernel for 64 Studio is: Linux 64studio 2.6.21-1-multimedia-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Fri Jun 22 00:00:33 UTC 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux Although later kernels can also be configured for RT use, there is a significant performance hit... I know the card has been reported to work, but I would recommend trying it on the .21 kernel.

I'm upgrading the kernel and

I'm upgrading the kernel and ALSA as we speak so disregard that.

Make that the 2.6.27.1

Make that the 2.6.27.1 kernel and 1.0.18rc3 ALSA, sorry.
