Rosegarden/MIDI question

I've been working with 64 Studio for about 1 and half months now, building my little home studio and slowly working out how it all hangs together. I've managed to make many Jack patchbay connections and it's slowly coming together, but I have a question about MIDI and Rosegarden. I can record MIDI data into Rosegarden from the X50 fine and I can play it back to the X50 but not with the correct patch, it only seems to play GM MIDI patches on the X50, how can use other voices on the synth? As an example. If I play a drum rhythm on the X50, using a non-GM drum patch and then record the track in Rosegarden, I can see the MIDI data being recorded in Rosegarden and I can play it back and hear the track on the X50, but it will only play using one of the GM sounds, not the original drum patch I used when I recorded the MIDI track... is there anyway I can a) play the track back using a non-GM patch and b) to store that patch data in Rosegarden so that it will always use this patch when I play the track back? I realise that some of these questions are probably basic MIDI stuff, but any help would be appreciated! Thanks John

Hi John It's been a while since I used rosegarden, but I did manage to set mine up to play the entire range of patches available on my playback device. Basically, there is a config file where the patch data is specified for the particular device you are using for playback. If you are lucky, someone has already created one, if not, they are just text files and can be cut/pasted and edited from the publically available patches. take a look here; there seem to be 2 X50 .rgd files available: http://rosegarden.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/rosegarden/trunk/rosegarden/data/library/ This whole directory should be present on your installed system. s~

Hi John, No matter the sound you heared when you recorded to Rosegarden, you only sent MIDI data, this is, note on, note off, note pitch, velocity... I think you already know this. For playback, Rosegarden sends these MIDI data to the playback device which in this case is the X50. In fact, the answer for a) is: Not within Rosegarden. You have to set up the X50 properly to get the sound you want when you use an external MIDI sequencer which is not the same that the sound you get when you play the keys (I'm stating the obvious here, this is the problem). This setup is somewhere else. Take a look at the X50 Operation Guide, from page 69. I'm not sure about b). I hope this helps. Pablo
