Graphics card recommendations

I'm still using an ageing Matrox Millennium G400 graphics card. I use it in a dual-head configuration, feeding 2 x flat panel displays. Both monitors are capable of 1600 x 1200 resolution but the card itself can only manage 1200 x 1024 on the secondary display. I'm a bit behind the times with regards to understanding graphics technology. My motherboard has an AGP3 slot which was pretty advanced in its day but presumably that's been well superceded by now? My options are either to upgrade the card and motherboard together or to keep my existing mobo and just upgrade the card. In either case, the main factor would be to get a card that can handle 1600 x 1200 on both outputs. Any suggestions..?

I find the best luck at "Mom and Pop" computer shops. I found a firewire card for $10. An ATI 91XX series graphics card for my wife's PC for $12... I'd look up in your area if there is a shop of this nature and go scavenger hunting!! There are some awesome deals. I am in Canada so results may vary depending on your location MiCK

PCIe would be the way to go, given you cannot find a cheap AGP somewhere. Besides, you have no guarantee that the new motherboard will be properly supported by linux yet! (It should - but just keep it in mind when you buy!)

Thanks Quentin. My reasoning was that I might be able to pick up an AGP card on Ebay which might be cheaper than (effectively) rebuilding my PC. Assuming that's not possible, what interface does a modern graphics card use? PCI Express? or has that also been superceded?

You will have to upgrade both. AGP cards are now excessively expensive if you can find them at all... Regarding the posts that went missing, I am also missing some posts from another thread. It disappeared as if a bad dream...

I don't understand what happened here. I first posted this message about an hour ago and a few seconds after posting I actually saw it in the forum saying "Created 9 seconds ago". But now it's mysteriously vanished ?!?
