DVD install image
DVD install image, thank you.
Is there something wrong?
How do i actually poll? I think it should have some point where to clickit
Ditto...
I think we were not supposed to vote yet... DVD install anyway
Should be working now :-)
I set up the poll, but hadn't activated it for site users, so it only worked for me - sorry about that!
Please don't let cd-r go.
Even if most people nowadays might have moved to dvd-burning, we are many who still are stuck with cd-r only. It would be great if you could provide a smaller iso for us, thanks!
There aren't many systems
There aren't many systems running 64 bit equipt with only a CD rom (and DVD drives are now cheap anyhow ). I suggest going to DVD and having a small package repository on the dvd for those without an internet connection, -or those who just want to know an application is tested and stable.
Not only 64
Well, as far as I understand there are still quite many users of the 32 bit version.
sweet distro
I'm really version 0.1 and only used apt since :-) on the main rig. We've also used the DVD to start w/2.0 on a 2nd freebob setup for the band/studio and live image to evangalize with. I'd say the distro dnld is near perfect!
thanks!
Live-DVD with option to
Live-DVD with option to install like the Ubuntu (and some other) distros would really rock IMHO.
Try it out first, and when all is working as it should just double click the installer on the desktop.
Cheers

USB Flash
One of my studio devices is a Mini-ITX based computer wich only has USB and Ethernet interfaces. I run a VNC server on the device so I can control it via my laptop. I install a system on a USB Flash device and boot from that. I would love to have the 64Studio distributed as an .img file that could be written to the flash device using "dd". If that is not possible it would be great to have aa tutorial on how you could build an .img file from the 64Studio distro.
Thanks
Lars-Erik Helander
Quick Workaround
If you can find a cheap USB DVD drive, you can boot your CD via that drive. I have one, and have done so to fix an old PC that did not have an IDE port available for a drive. (Too many HDD!!)
Try google for a HowTo. You could build your own .img, and if it works well, write a 64studio howto...
Cheers
Network Install
I think a network install option should be made available. That way, if the 64 Studio developers don't want to mess with a stripped down CD, just make a CD installer that retrieves all of the files over the internet like FreeBSD does. I have a DVD-ROM drive, but it won't boot up the installation DVD, it will boot up any bootable CD, though. So, my only option is to use the old CD installer and "hope" that the upgrade goes without a hitch. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, so I'm re-installing from scratch to see if the upgrade works the second time around.
USB Stick install
I found a good instruction for Debian Sarge to create a USB Key install
http://d-i.pascal.at/
To convert to etch is easy - use one of these links for the installer files
Follow the "Flexible" install instructions and include the 64studio 2.0 iso fitting your arcitecture on the drive as per the instruction.
I did not use this yet, but I intend to next time. It could put the DVD drive issue to bed...
Cheers,
Quentin
net install
why not make a minimal iso and install over the internet like lots of other distros. uses more bandwidth though, if you re-install your system.
update from etch
Well actually I upgraded from etch. Changed the sources.list, downloaded the 64studio-utils, and ran the update script. Everything clear and nice!!! Using testing now.
I did so 'cause I didn't want to use all the default software, nor gnome (I like Icewm and xfce :-) It would be just great if installer could skip tasksel and install only the base system at first, so that I can install packages manually after.
Update from Etch
BECAUSE the F'N CD install failed when the gdm was supposed to start
so my install is all bastardized and god only knows what it's supposed to look like
but I gotz my Nvidia driver and Beryl runnin' so that's a start.
dvd-image :-) in spite of missing dvd-drive
I have succeeded in installing the dvd image without using a dvd drive! :-)
live DVD with install option
I'd prefer a live DVD with an install option so that I could try it out first. But since I didn't have that option,I just installed straight off a DVD from Linux Format magazine and it all worked out quite well. I had to download some new alsa packages to get the audio to work on my HP/Compaq, but now everything works fine. 64 studio is an excellent choice to replace the sluggish XP that came on my laptop.
USB Thumbdrive as Bootable and portable 64studio - works for me
Using the Installation DVD (32-bit version) that I burned on a WinXP system using Roxio 6's image burn feature, I installed to a virgin 8GB USB thumbdrive. I have minimal Linux experience and it was really easy. It booted first time and I've had it running on a half dozen other machines so far. Where it occasionally snags is the graphic config is set for a widescreen monitor and so it gags on 4x3 displays. The 64studio audio apps run great my HP zd7020us notebook. I have an old Dell Inspiron 7000 that I would like to install 64 studio on but it won't boot from DVD, although it has a DVD drive; it only sees it as a CD at boot. It also does not see the USB on boot, BIOS does not offer this option, despite a built-in USB 1.1 port. An Installation CD would be nice for these older machines.
My problems now are configuring WiFi and then I'll work on adding my MIDI and Firewire audio interfaces. Any tips on where to get help with these tasks would be appreciated.
tekrytor
apt-get dist-upgrade
or whatever scripts the maintainers provide.
oops
double-post... darn laggy dialup.
CD version please!
I spent all my money on cool audio gear, now I can't afford a DVD burner. I 'm using the live CD right now (very impressed, btw) and was expecting an install option. Is that unreasonable?

64bit
yeah,
and most of them are running it on a 64bit system(grin)
same excuse for only having a CD drive.
time you UPGRADED...
Cheers Dennis
Install Image
Either a dvd image with option for KDE its a pain installing then removing gnome and then installing kde!
Or smaller net install iso
:-)
